One tap from bored to playing

The gap between wanting a game and starting one is where most evenings die. We measured ours.

The honest competitor of a browser game is not another game — it is the back button. Every second between the tap and the first playable frame is a second in which the tap gets undone.

So the fair is built backwards from the first frame. Game pages load the cover and the play button before anything else; the embed is told to hold its network requests until you press play; nothing above the fold needs a font that has not arrived.

On an ordinary Malaysian 4G line, the median from tap to playable lands under three seconds. That is the number we protect. Every widget that wanted to ship on the front page had to argue against that number, and several lost.
